Diamond Carat

Carat is often the first thing to come to mind when thinking about a diamond’s size. Size and carat weight are closely related but there are other factors in a diamond’s appearance. Cut and shape also play a role in whether the diamond appears visually larger or smaller than its actual carat weight.

Kwiat Standards

A properly cut diamond will not have too much weight in hidden areas. The added weight increases the cost without giving the diamond a larger appearance. At Kwiat, we cut our diamonds to keep the carat weight in the right places. Each gem has the widest possible diameter to appear larger than other diamonds of comparable carat weight. And because of their superior cut, our diamonds will appear whiter than their GIA color grade. We call this the Kwiat Tiara® Cut.

Diamond Color and Clarity

Diamond Color

Diamonds are rated on a color scale developed by the GIA, the world’s premier diamond grading nonprofit. The color grading system is based on the alphabet, beginning with the letter D and running all the way through Z. A grade of D is the best possible grade a diamond can receive, which translates to an absence of color. Diamonds with this grade tend to be the most rare and valuable.

Diamond Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence of imperfections, known as inclusions, in the crystal structure of the diamond. Nearly all diamonds contain some sort of inclusion, as they are part of a diamond’s characteristics and structure. An inclusion within a diamond is natural, and on the higher end of the clarity scale, does not take away from its beauty.

My name is Greg Kwiat, and I want to help you learn everything you need to know to buy a diamond.

I’d like to introduce you to the Kwiat Oval, the most exceptional oval diamond in the world. Let’s explore what makes the Kwiat Oval extraordinary and how we have perfected the art of cutting this classic shape. Oval diamonds are, just as the name suggests, oval in shape and outline. Beautiful ovals will have graceful rounded edges and a lovely elongated shape. They’re faceted with a brilliant cut pattern, the same way a round diamond is cut, and as a result, they have a very similar brilliance and sparkle. Oval diamonds appeal to those who are looking for something classic with a twist. When worn in a ring, the oval shape can seem to elongate the finger and will often look larger than other shapes.

There are early examples of the oval shape dating back hundreds of years and a number of famous historical oval diamonds. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the shape and cutting style became more widely available and popular. And they’ve continued to grow in popularity over the decades since, the engagement ring of choice for many jewelry lovers and celebrities.

The Kwiat Oval is the ideal shape, graceful curvature, beautiful proportions, not too long and not too short. It’s perfectly cut and faceted with excellent polish and excellent symmetry, a rarity in stones of this shape. And because of our incredibly precise standards, the Kwiat Oval is pure brightness and fire throughout the entire stone with no unattractive bow-tie effect. To truly understand why the Kwiat Oval is so exceptional, it helps to compare it to lesser quality ovals that other jewelers cut and sell.

There are two primary problems when it comes to subpar ovals. When speaking about the shape of an oval diamond, we refer to the length to width ratio, which is calculated by dividing the millimeter length of the diamond by its millimeter width. If an oval cut diamond is too long, it becomes too skinny and looks imbalanced when set in a ring. The higher the ratio, the more elongated the diamond is. And length to width ratios over 1.5 indicate a stone that is too elongated relative to the ideal shape. If the diamond is cut too short, it has a less attractive, stubby appearance. Length to width ratios under 1.35 typically indicate a stone that is shorter than the ideal shape. These stones look less like ovals and more like misshapen round diamond. Poorly cut ovals will typically exhibit the bow-tie effect, which is a term used to describe darkness across the center of the diamond in a bow-tie shape. Badly cut ovals will fail to return the maximum light to the eye, leading to a dull, lifeless, or windowy appearance.

The Kwiat Oval is perfectly cut with excellent polish and excellent symmetry, and the result is pure brightness and fire throughout the entire diamond and a diamond that looks larger for its carat weight. Very short shapes typically carry excess weight on the underside of the stone, where it does not add to the visual size appearance, causing the diamond to appear smaller. The most beautiful ovals will be properly proportioned. Often, we see diamonds with bulging shoulders that are considerably less graceful than the proper shape. And when the shoulders of an oval are too flat, the diamond looks pointy and unattractive. Diamonds that are outside of the ideal shape range typically sell at discounted prices. By comparison, the Kwiat Oval Diamond is always cut to the perfect oval shape in very strict length-to-width ratios, never too long and never too short. Another major difference between oval diamonds is the quality of the cut. In diamonds, cut is all about angles, proportions, and facets. And as with all shapes, the cut quality of an oval diamond is the critical element that will determine its beauty. When an oval is well cut, the diamond will be bright throughout the entire stone and exhibit a great degree of fire and scintillation.

The biggest issue with most oval diamonds is that they are not well cut, and as a result, lack life and brilliance. At Kwiat, all of our diamonds are cut to rigorous technical and quality standards. With more than 100 years of diamond cutting experience, we make certain that every diamond in every shape is cut to be the most beautiful that it can be. The Kwiat Oval is the most beautiful and perfectly cut oval diamond in the world.

BUILDING A
BRILLIANT LEGACY

Kwiat is a family business with a heritage of service, quality, and integrity. Guided by these values, Kwiat has flourished, blossoming like the family name, which means “flower” in Polish.

In 1907, Sam Kwiat opened a diamond shop in New York City; he was joined by his son, David, in 1933. Today, Kwiat has grown to become a renowned brand led by David’s son, Lowell, and his grandsons, Greg, Cory, and Russell. Like their forebears, they have perfected the science and art of cutting diamonds. And they continue the tradition of trust and authority that Sam Kwiat established more than a century ago.
