This two-metal technique dates to the late 1700s, when jewelers favored white metal to enhance a diamond’s sparkle. Since platinum and white gold had yet to be introduced, silver was the only option — but it tarnished over time. To protect skin and fabric from staining, artisans backed the silver with gold, a detail preserved in this design.
